A repaired pitch mark costs nothing. An unrepaired one costs three weeks.
Golfers who look after the course save their club real money — and it is measurable. Below is the published research on pitch marks and divots, and a model you can run on your own rounds and wage figures to see what the damage is costing in green-staff hours.
Three numbers that matter

Repaired straight away, a pitch mark starts recovering within 24 hours. Left longer than a day in normal growing conditions, recovery takes over three weeks.

On the greens
- Properly repaired marks recover fully in two to three weeks. Repaired with poor technique, that doubles — and the scar that remains is the largest of any treatment tested.
- Two days after repair, unrepaired marks measured 640 mm² of scarring on soft greens against 459 mm² on firm ones — soft, receptive greens punish neglect about 39% harder.
- A busy course takes more than 1,000 ball marks a day. The Belfry's team reports repairing up to 30 on a single green on a bad day.
- Pitch-mark scarring costs usable hole locations. The Belfry estimates five or six more pin placements per green would be available if the surfaces were undamaged — and fewer placements means wear concentrates, which causes more damage again.
- Unrepaired marks are an entry point for weed invasion, which is how Poa annua gets into a bentgrass green. That cost arrives later, as herbicide and re-turfing.
On the fairways and tees
- A filled divot still has to germinate before it recovers — under a week for perennial rye, around two weeks for creeping bent, up to a month for Kentucky blue.
- On warm-season turf there is effectively no recovery over winter. The USGA's line is that a divot taken in December "might still be there in May" — which for couch fairways here means a divot taken in June is still there in November unless someone fills it.
- The benchmark GCSAA survey put average annual divot repair at US$3,671 on course tees, US$4,240 on fairways and US$3,383 on range tees — roughly A$28,000 a year in today's money, with courses reporting anywhere from $500 to $33,000.
Where it turns into money
Labour is between 55% and 60% of a course maintenance budget in the GCSAA's 2024 survey, and the USGA now puts it above 70% at many clubs. Nothing else on the budget moves like hours do, so a task that quietly consumes crew time every single morning is the one worth costing out.
The anchor figure comes from The Belfry: mowing the Brabazon's greens takes five hours, and staff spend roughly 15 minutes on each green just repairing pitch marks. Across 18 greens that is four and a half hours a day — before a mower moves. It is the clearest published measurement of what golfers leave behind.

That total is the ceiling, not the bill — members already repair some of it, and no club gets to zero. But the arithmetic reconciles with the only real-world measurement available: 15 minutes a green across 18 greens, at 15 seconds a mark, is about 1,050 marks a day, which is what roughly 130 rounds at eight marks a round produces. The model and The Belfry's stopwatch agree.
Run it on your own numbers
Change any figure. The defaults are the worked example above; the two behaviour figures are the ones a training programme actually moves.
This is an estimate built from published figures, not an audit. It counts pitch marks only — divots, bunkers and the later cost of weed invasion sit on top of it.
Which makes it a training problem
The research keeps landing on the same point: willingness is not the constraint. Kansas State found that poor technique — not the tool, and not indifference — doubled recovery time and left the worst permanent scar. Purdue found a wooden tee scored 5.4 against 5.0 for leaving the mark alone. A club full of well-meaning members using a tee badly is paying most of the cost anyway.
A sign at the first tee assumes the golfer already knows how. That is the assumption the numbers do not support. Green Card teaches pitch-mark repair, divot filling, bunker care and pace as assessed material, and then gives the golfer something that shows they have done it — so a club can tell the difference at the counter rather than hoping.
